Reagan in high style. I wish I had seen her come down the stairs in that tight little green ankle skirt. Somehow she managed it without falling. I think we need the other girls cousins around for a dress up party.

I clicked quite a few pics of playing with the old garage. They were quite absorbed with gassing up the cars and roaring them down the ramp. It was fun to watch Hudson learn from his older siblings.

Hudson was delighted to go upstairs on his own. The balcony railing was a thrill for him. He'd chirp and squeal to anyone below.

Christmas Break

What would Christmas be without children? We really enjoyed getting together with all our kids and grandkids over the holidays. We are thankful to be traveling though life in their company.

A Thought on East Winds from Kathy

Yesterday the Wasatch Front (especially Davis County) experienced destructive east winds - the first in about 12 years.

In the early 60's we moved from Star Valley to Kaysville - a few blocks west of Davis High and Kaysville Jr. High. We lived in the new Happy Homes Subdivision - full of brick ramblers and split levels.

I remember it as early spring. It was either a weekend or school was cancelled. Dad was not home. Warnings came of an impending "east wind". We had never heard of an "east wind". We watched the other houses and did what they were doing - garbage cans under cover, tarps brought in, loose stuff picked up. Then windows started being boarded up. We had lumber, but nothing large enough for windows, and our house had several on the east side.

Our kind neighbors, Mr. Benedict and Mr. Neville just appeared with plywood and covered our patio doors and the basement windows. They worked quickly and were gone. We could tell they had been through this before.

Mother had us sit in the staircase which had 2 protecting walls while the worst of the "east wind" blew itself out. We could hear gravel from the roofs hitting the sides of the house. I have a memory of the plywood flexing in and out on the patio doors and the curtain moving inside the kitchen. Things rattled and banged as the wind howled and groaned around the corners of the house.

That east wind ripped paneling off the Jr. High and blew it down into our sub division, several gravel roofs were blown away; long tar paper strips twisted over chain link fences; garbage cans were everywhere, and trees took a battering.

Scarey as that experience was, it doesn't come close to what folks experienced yesterday. Now it's an opportunity to demonstrate with their children what being a kind neighbor means.

Spudnuts at Lee and Bonnies'

We all relaxed at Lee and Bonnie's home and enjoyed warm homemade Spudnuts - Grandpa's special treat. Their home was warm and cozy and the perfect setting to enjoy each-other's company and let the kids get acquainted. The great grandkids ranged from 10 to new babies. So fun. Sadly it is probably one of the few times we will all be together like that. One of the grand-kids said how nice it is to get together and remember you really do like being part of the big family.

The Luncheon

The Meridian Ward Relief Society organized a wonderful luncheon after the services for Grandpa and the snowy dedication of the grave at the Veteran's Cemetery.

Grandma was there, but didn't understand the who, what or why of the whole day. I believe we would have been sad with her if she was sad. It was nice to see her and be "in the moment" with her.

It was a joyous celebration of Grandpa's life. We loved visiting with the cousins and aunts and uncles. Several people took the opportunity to offer stories and Abbie took lots of photos.

We did have a small medical emergency - bead up a 3 year old nose. Uncle Bill and the Bishop/Physician offered advice. The parents went in search of a straw to try and suction the little bead. Luckily it blew out of it's own accord at the hotel; emergency room avoided; Straw added to the first aide kit.

Grandpa Dale passed away Nov. 11th in Seattle while preparing for surgery at the VA Hospital.

The past few years have been a struggle with health problems for both Grandpa and Grandma. But we focus our memories on all the years prior to that: Murray, Rawlins, Green River, the cabin and all their adventures - usually with a few available grandkids in tow.

He was a wonderful example to us of a gracious, kind and loving father and husband. We are thankful for his dynamic, active, outlook on life and that we could share in it. We'll miss you Dad - but look forward to seeing you again!

Grandma Kennington's Birthday

We spent a great day with Grandma Kennington for her 85th birthday.
There was a full house and the weather was beautiful.
Her Birthday as become the official Forrest Kennington Family Reunion.

Had a fun time with some of the grandkids this weekend and enjoyed Andrea and Jerames' new sod over a picnic lunch on their deck. Peach pie at Collette and Brents' as we delivered children and met up with Devan and Jackie. very nice weekend!

Dad has been working on a playhouse for the 3-10 year old range. It'll have the sand pile underneath and a deck at about 4 ft with a roofed deck above. We used the old ballister posts peeled for the upstairs balcony years ago. The roof is the next thing, then the siding. It's looking good and the view is great from the top.

We're just back from Star Valley and a wonderful trip up to Turnerville to pick rasberries. It couldn't get any better - a beautiful morning - the first frost laying in the shadows, a warm sun peaking over the mountain and Denna's beautiful yard. It was so peaceful - only the sound of Willow Creek as we filled our buckets and visited. What a blessing to have not only my own mother, but other strong examples such as Denna in my life.

Cousin's Camp - DINO-MITE- Day Three

Here it is - from sleeping bag rides in the morning to the final group shot after dinner. The shirts were a big hit Andrea. They loved picking their favorite color for the words. Thanks for all your work. Notice even the youngest cousins have T Shirts with their names and birthdays.
Collette and Andrea flew into making salads in the afternoon while the kids took a break. Dinner was delicious. It's so good to visit with our kids and catch up.
The bubble wands quickly became light sabers. Defenders of the galaxy were suddenly all over the house. Pretty good sound effects too.

We did a good thing this year - tacked the "official" Mike Hamblin reunion on to the end of Cousins' Camp. Those who could, stayed overnight for church.

Statistics:

While we did have a few tears over spilled milk the first day, we are happy to announce no major meltdowns, only 6 bandaids used, no potty accidents, the kids were mostly kind to each other and patient with each others' younger siblings (not always with their own however).
We were surprised that homesickness didn't seem to crop up this year.
We learned that 4 & 5 year olds have a hard time not peeking out at the fish pond reactions when they're the ones loading the goodies on the fish pole. Ohh's and Ahh's are just too enticing not to look.
Star Wars, basketball, Dora the Explorer and cartoons fill a big part of their imaginations.
Basketballs in the old wash tub, croquette, sandpiles, cowboy golf, rockets and hula hoops kept everyone occupied outside.
Little girls need a baby doll to play with and a purse with a cell phone in it.
Fireworks at bedtime can be too noisy and stressful for 3 year olds. They both fell asleep with their hands over their ears while sitting on our laps.
It's fun to visit in your pajamas on Grandma's bed in the morning. (Grandma is going to need a king size bed pretty soon)
Braden will officially be a teenager in just 4 years.
Pre school graduation was pretty important - and school is an exciting prospect on the horizon this fall.
Three year olds love to cuddle and have a story book read to them.
18 month olds are just aware of everything going on around them as 58 year olds - probably more so.

Braden, thank you for being patient with all the other ones who wanted to be with you every minute of the day because you are the oldest and they think you're cool. Some day you will hope for that with you're own kids.

Observations from the grandkids:

"How old are you Grandma?" followed by, "When are you going to die?"

Just after pouring cement,"Can we walk on it now?"

"Fireworks are too loud!"

"Grandpa, can we have popcorn with our movie?"

On a huge mud hill on the desert: "This could be the dinosaur's eye, and here's his head, ribs, tail, etc.!!!"

"Grandma, I need to go to the bathroom. Let's go home. But I didn't need to go before."

"Grandma! I found a human finger!"

"Grandma, I love you." (my favorite)

The youngest one indignantly explaining how Grandpa splashed water in her eyes at bath time. "Poppa!...talk talk talk [couldn't understand]..Poppa!" She was quite upset all evening.

We learned that one family has the official "potty dance" and I believe that same family has a "huge shower big enough for the whole family to fit in, and if you and Grandpa come you can fit in it too!" Don't ask...

Cousins' Camp DINO-MITE! Day Two

We had our desert trip (they are growing into real climbers), Target practice with the water jug, treats, discovering bones and skeletons (of last winter's kills), and then home to the beach, lunch, and some relaxing and decorating hats. After chicken nuggets, tater tots and grapes, we had our official birthday treats at the "fish pond" then baths and fireworks. Three just couldn't survive the fireworks - too big a day.

Cousins Camp Day One

We look forward to this all year. We get to play with the grand kids for three days. Dinosaurs are the theme this year. Thank you Andrea for coming up.
Schedule: Dinos had to be unearthed in the sand pile. Yes, Oriental Trading has skeletons. Lunch. Crocquet, baseball, tetherball, and in general playing. Then the cold weather started. We had a lot of chasing around the house in dino masks. Those kids can really growl. We braved hot dogs over the bon-fire - but it was too cold for smores. Parachute games with little beach balls, more playing,then PJ's, prayers and popcorn with a movie - exactly in that order. Jenna was the first out, then Reagan. The rest watched Ice Age the Return of the Dinosaurs, or something like that. Great Day One.
I was bumbed - caught a beast of a cold out of the blue. Grandma's gift to everyone. Sorry.

Fun at Grandma's House

The weekend in a nutshell: Birthday dinner for Blaine in Brigham City, slumber party (up till 12:11 am), breakfast, soccer games/playgrounds, shopping for picnic goodies, picnic at Antelope Island (smelly water along the causeway, seagulls, pelicans, buffalo and lots of biting gnats), then to Andrea and Jerames' visiting and playing with Duchess and Rowdy, dinner, then home for another movie, but everyone gave up the ghost. (was that one run on sentence or what?!!

Sunday was great - kids did so well at church, After Sac. Mtg. Jenna asked, "Do they have a nursery here?" and the girls took off. Jace said it was "the best Primary ever!" After a little lunch, Mom and Dad were back. We headed to Tremonton and hugged a cute little Leia. Jenna was a tired little puppy. We were blown home in that crazy wind and dust storm.

Cheyenne with cousins

Just back from a quick trip to Cheyenne delivering art work. Also delivered 2 grand kids to their cousins for an over-nighter. It appears they had a good time - they slept half the way home.
Mike and I both commented on what an enjoyable trip it was. The art gallery is north of the railroad in a re development area - an old brick warehouse. It's cute. We put some prints, some glass, some acrylic, cards, books, etc. A bit of everything. It's our first gallery experience.

Andrea and Jerame and Stephanie threw a great Halloween party last weekend. The dinner was delicious, the entertainment was - entertaining - who knew a mummy could be wrapped in under 2 minutes... and the pumpkin carving was at the least creative. We had a wonderful time getting acquainted with Jerame's family and enjoying Devan's family. Thanks again!

We walked around Cowboy Days with Collette and her little family this weekend. It totally wore the little boys out. Corbin slept through an intense shopping session at Wallmart. They slept all the way to our house. The car seat photos show the shape they were in when we arrived home. Bridger was out for the next 14 hours. Corbin was good for the evening, but slept through 3 hours of church Sunday. Who knew fun could be so tough...

Grandpa is such good company. We've enjoyed having him here for a few days. Fri. he and Mike took a ride to the dam, visited Red Canyon for lunch and Sheep Creek on the way home. Like I mentioned in the Teddye post, the geology between here and Vernal is incredible. Their pictures show a little of the fun. I think they had a good "father and son" outing.

I thought he might get away without working on the garden walls for one summer, but no such luck. He realized the pine tree needed more room to spread out, so this was his project last weekend. We had enough blocks here and there to finish the job. Thanks Mike.

We had a great treat this week - a visit from our niece Teddye. She helped me set up my class rooms, we sketched and did a little art - buffalo - and tried a few new things with glass, including jewelry making in the microwave. Then we tripped on down to the dam and Vernal for the day. The new Utah Field Museum is worth the trip. It's a great desgn. The Quarry will be open again in a year or so. The Geology in that area is fantastic!

Sweet Treat

Mike and I were delighted to have grandkids visit this week. We had a hotdog roast, played games, made homemade bread and cinnamon rolls, turtles and teddy bears. The kids did a lot of chasing and playing with each other. A sweet treat for us.

Blaine and Angie and Andrea and Jerame spent the night.

Congratulations to Collette, Blaine and Mike for doing a team triathlon. Blaine biked, Mike swam and Collette ran. Blaine also ran with her just for fun. The rest of us rooted from the sidelines.

The Parade was full of great floats, politicians and fire trucks. It lasted 55 minutes! The kids got the hang of harvesting candy. We were also right in front of the bakery - so great smells and a goodie too.

The kids made "bobs" for lunch - delicious - and a little drum music to boot!

We ran back to Lyman and the boys helped us take down the art exhibit before they left for home themselves.

While you were at Camp Mom...

A few quick shots to show their mother what they were up to while she was at girls camp: lots of jumping in the crib, playing outside with rockets and bubbles and sprinklers, and when it was too hot outside there were movies, stickers, naps and reading story books.

By my calculations, Reagan nibbled on one moth, two flies, several pine cones and what ever paper she could get her hands on. She'd see me coming, wrinkle up her nose, wad the paper and take a bite, then hold it up to me at arm's length with a resigned look.

Corbin became the puzzle master - putting it together about 20 times each day - focusing so hard and trying to keep his sister from gnawing on the pieces. He also loved peeling foam stickers and making pictures. What a cutie.

I believe I could hold my own on the volleyball court thanks to Bridger. He found a beach ball and we practiced and practiced. The rug was our court, he's quite the dedicated server. I thank him for all the coaching he gave me. At least he chased all the out of bounders...

They were all excited to see their Dad and take a birthday cake up to their mother. Happy Birthday Collette!

Summer yard

The yard has been beautiful despite a cool start to the summer. We're still waiting for the first radish and lettuce - veggies seem a little slow. But the flowers have been wonderful. Mike put a fence up on the west and I think it made a difference for the front garden. It's the best it's been in years. It's also the first year we haven't been hauling brick or dirt and sawdust. I'm sure he's enjoying his vacation.

Archibald McPhail and Rock Creek

July brings our thoughts to our country and the Mormon Pioneers. Here's a little genealogy tidbit: We stopped up at Rock Creek (on South Pass near Atlantic City) on our way home from Riverton last week.

Grandma Kennington's great grandfather, Archibald McPhail, a shoe maker from Scotland, was with the Willie Handcart Company back in October of 1856. He was responsible for some older ladies in the group. The handcart company became stranded on Rock Creek by an early blizzard in late October. The country is high desert plains with occasional ravines where the streamlets flow.

As the story goes, Archibald discovered one of his little ladies was missing when they finally pitched camp off the ridge in a sheltered area where Rock Creek has cut a little canyon. He went back up the hill through the blizzard and found her somewhere on the other side of the stream farther east. Sounds like at the crossing they made at mid-day. She was despondent, weak and refused to go another step. He was forced to carried her across the frozen stream. But they fell through the ice at this crossing. The story says he was wet to his chest. Now the stream crossing looks pretty shallow and the slope is gradual, so I wonder if he didn't pitch forward when the ice broke which soaked him to the waist or chest.

They managed to slosh back to camp, (7 miles if it's to the official camp site at Rock Creek) probably chilled to the bone in the wet clothing. One account says his clothing was frozen by then. That's entirely possible if they were trudging 7 miles to the west against the blizzard.

Back at camp, the company was too weak to have much of a fire, so Archibald had no means of drying off. Everyone else was huddled in tents trying to find protection against the wind and snow. Archibald settled the little lady in a tent, then found there was no spot for him. So he pulled a handcart over himself and spent a cold night with the blizzard howling. In the morning they had to use a butcher knife to free him from the frozen ground. He was suffering from hypothermia (obviously) by morning with chills and fever.

He survived to the Bear River crossing south of Evanston a few days later but was too sick to walk. From the Willie Company Log: "1856 6 Nov. Archibald McPheil, from Greenock, Argyleshire, Scotland, died about 2 a.m, aged 40 years. Much snow on the ground this morning and still falling. Go down Echo Canyon, roads very bad at the crossing of streams; forded Weber River and camped on its banks. It snowed most of the day. The camping ground presented a most dismal appearance, as we rolled on to it there being much snow on the ground and it being late at night..." Willie Company Log, William Woodward, Clerk. Published in the booklet, "Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God" found in the Riverton Stake Second Rescue Collection, Riverton, Wyoming.

His grave site is just to the south of the pioneer marker overlooking the Bear River Crossing. We know that because his widow took historian Andrew Jensen to that location before her death.

The guides at Rock Creek all knew the story of Archibald. One fellow was quite emotional and said Archibald was his hero for that act of compassion. They were fairly confident they knew the location of the rescue from journal accounts and the Willie Company log.

If you drive up there, the location is 7 miles farther east of the official Rock Creek camp area with the large grave of the 13 who perished that same night. (see marker photo) That would mean he walked 7 miles to find her and 7 miles back to the camp in soaked clothing.

Now, in July, the stream is low, and the shallow crossing and meadow is welcome after miles of dry plain. It has probably been altered by the mining operations in the area since the 1860's. These photos give you a peaceful and warm view of where a pivotal event took place in the life of Archibald McPhail on that cold October night so long ago.

I picture him as a man of humble circumstances who found great resolve to be a faithful steward in difficult circumstances on that October night. This one single experience in his mortal life has probably born a stronger testimony to his posterity than anything he could have done. I believe he is my hero too.

Lynn & Nikki Visit

My brother Lynn and his family stopped by for lunch a few weeks ago. Our nephew Mike and Collette's family came to visit too. The kids sure look big when you haven't seen them for a year.

Cousins' Camp

June brought Cousin's Camp.

Everyone was old enough to come except for little Reagan.

There was the painting the hats - never can have enough hats with all those fair skinned kids.

Then a little tetherball, sand pile, pouring and decorating the garden steps, naps, eating, movie nights with glow bracelets, breakfast on the desert, shooting, fossil hunting, crafts with sticky foam, printing, hand prints in the patio and the fish pond (great job Braden) to celebrate everyones birthday.

We had a guest appearance by the youngest cousin. She loved all the attention. We loved it and look forward to next year!

Closing a Chapter: Moving Grandpa and Grandma

Like a reading book, we have chapters in life. We were all a bit sad to see the Green River chapter close, but knew it was the best. The Boise chapter has been good for all concerned.

We marvel at the wonderful home Grandpa and Grandma made in Green River. It was gracious, clean, organized, and a treat to visit.

Here are a few pictures to remember their move. We are very grateful to Bob, their next door neighbor. He graciously watched over the house and yard all winter long and took care of the watering and mowing in the spring. Whenever we were there cleaning or packing or just wondering what to do next, he was there to help or visit a little. We should all be so luck to have a neighbor like that once in our lives.

Spring Clean up at Grandma Kennington's

It's good to see everyone after a winter of being cooped up. Many of the kids, grandkids and great grandkids were able to come and get the yard into shape. We had a delicious lunch of several soups, breads and desserts. It's always good to get re-acquainted. After the work there was bubbles, basketballs, and sidewalk art.

The New Book!

We decided to print this little red head book while the grandkids were little enough to still laugh at it. We made 500 copies in hopes of getting enough $ back to print another story, etc. etc.
So far we're into it about 150 copies by word of mouth. Hopefully it will pick up for the holidays. If you know redheads or their associates please spread the word. I don't want to paper the bathroom with it. (mommasaysbook.blogspot.com) I really hate marketing things.

Mike goes with us to State Art each year as chaperon. The kids are fun and well behaved. It's a 4 day trip. Then Prom was my baby this year. I didn't get any photos of the big night, but it was called "A Black Tie Affair" and turned out great. The kids are to be congratulated.

There's the Leap Year Baby celebrating his first birthday. He's such a happy and lovable little guy. I believe his sense of humor and easy going disposition will carry him in life. He likes to test the waters, but is always ready with a laugh and a hug. We can't imagine life without him.

Winter was filled with bright sunny days, blowing snow, cute grandkids, hungry deer and fun get-togethers. One of the cutest lines was from Ashlee.
Corbin who could now get wherever he choose, was sorely tempted to open the little curio cabinet. Ashlee appointed herself the guard. If he scooted anywhere near it, she would shake her finger and firmly say, "No No Torbin."

Mike has endured for 36 years. They haven't all been easy, but I'm so grateful we've tried.

Christmas

Grandpa Hamblin became sick and needed to be hospitalized, so I stayed with Grandma while Mike was taking care of Grandpa. We took her to the hospital for a daily visit. Over the course of the vacation she eventually forgot who we were going to see. This is Christmas day. They opened their presents in the room. We were beginning to worry about what would happen when it was time to go back to school with Grandpa still not well. So we arranged for assisted living care. It didn't please Grandpa, but we could see no other avenue.
One funny part of the whole ordeal was that Grandma forgot who we were and that we were even married. She was dead set against us both sleeping in the front bedroom. That was fine with me, but Mike had to do some fast talking to avoid the back bedroom.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving rolls around. Braden and Ashlee work on pictures of themselves. The Nativity gets a final coat of varnish at school. The girls set a beautiful table and we enjoy dinner and celebrate Mike's birthday.

It's been quite the year! We're taking a breath before school starts. So I'll do a quick rundown of the past 11 months - just for the record. We've had opportunities to get acquainted with grandkids, help parents, visit old friends and try a few new things along the way.

My mother's birthday is today. She's a slight woman of great resolve who stands by her principles. I've learned so much from her example - the importance of family, thinking only the best of people, not gossiping, love of gardening, popcorn in the evening...the list goes on and on. She let us learn and improve from our mistakes. We became better because we knew she expected better.

I am so grateful that this humble, quiet, woman is my mother. Words fail me as I try to sum up her influence in my life and the life of our family, but Mom has served as the constant, unchanging, rock in our world. We thank you. We love you.

The kids really kept us going! We had Hamblins, Kenningtons, Beattys and Braden's cousins, the Youngs from Kaysville. We're glad Tiffni came with Kurt because she took over when we were worn out (we need an afternoon nap to keep up with these kids). First order of business was to get the tie dying started, get the tents up, and start the bonfire. Hot dogs and smores for supper!

We enjoyed a mini reunion at Grandma's this weekend. Everyone worked at getting the yard in shape. Jobs sure go fast when there are lots of hands helping. Visiting, lunch, and Nate came down with chicken-pocks eventhough he was immunized. That makes me a little nervous.

All things have focused on State Art this past month. We had a great trip. Mike is a great sport for coming along and chaperoning. Weather cooperated, kids were fun and needed relatively little prodding despite some late nights. So now we're relaxing and enjoying the last few weeks of school.

We are grateful to have great-grandparents near. It's fun to watch our grandkids get acquainted and interact. It gives me pause to think that Dale and Lois have memory of their great-grandparents - so that represents about 7 generations of family interaction even though we're not all on earth at the same time.

The Commute: Part One

It's been an adventure getting to work this January. I'm grateful for 4 wheel drive. We've had more snow and the road crews seem to be at a loss. But this morning was wonderful - a little warmer and no wind at all. So the drifts are quiet, not trying to snake across the road...The lane is getting crowded. About 4 new homes going in this winter, and more promised. I guess the days of me being the only one on the road are gone. I even pass two buses on my way. But it's a comfort of sorts to know that someone will come along to help pull you out if needed.
